COVID-19 and UIF (unemployment Insurance Fund)

The UIF Department will compensate workers affected by the COVID-19 lockdown through its current Illness and Reduced Work Time Benefit.

Only employees that have been contributing towards UIF currently will be eligible to claim.

Short Time / Reduced Working Time

Description: Where a Company shuts down for a certain period, applies short time or reduced working hours.

  • This benefit is payable by the UIF Department and will be the difference between what the employers pays and the normal UIF benefits payable should an employee lose employment.
Documents required: 
  • UI19 and UI2.7 (Completed by Employer)
  • UI2.1b
  • UI2.8
  • Letter from employer confirming short time, reduced work time or temporary layoff due to COVID-19
  • Copy of ID document
Submission Channel: 
  • Email or Fax to the nearest UIF Office

Illness Benefit

Description: Where an employee is quarantined for 14 days or more.

Both the Employer and Employee need to sign letters provided by the UIF Department. These letters will replace the normal Medical Certificate.  This is only applicable for a 14 day period of quarantine. Any period in excess of the 14 days will require a Medical Certificate and a UI-3 form to be submitted.

Documents required:
  • UI19 and UI2.7 (completed by employer)
  • UI2.2 (a portion of which must be completed by the Doctor)
  • UI2.8
  • Copy of ID document

Making Application:

Employers must complete the UI19 and UI2.7 forms. Employers must also state the last day the employee was at work and also the reason for the termination of service.
